Mother’s Day Poem

Palmer’s Star

When a star is born
and drifts away from its mother
when the bonds of gravity pull like taffy
thinning, but never gone
when satellites emerge or are drawn in
comets settling down
when its mother dies
and it sees that last light
from millions of years before
having mourned her death
for those millions of years
what can it do but look to its planets and moons
friends and lovers
with the desperate boyish hope
somehow that he resembles her
if they never saw her light
through him they will remember her
